And you thought you ran out of juice too early in the day. Just look at your laptop's woefully low battery. And what about that smartphone or tablet? Not even lunchtime and it's already running on lithium-ion fumes. What gives? Adjust your laptop's power plan. Monte said every laptop, be it a Mac or PC, has power-saving options. On Apple notebooks, you can adjust power settings in the Energy Saver control panel. For Windows laptops, Windows 8.1 has two default plans: Balanced and Power saver. Swenson said you can also create and customize power plans in Windows. Keep it cool. It's easy to worry about bad charging habits thanks to the training we've had from old rechargeable batteries, but lithium-ion batteries have a worse enemy: heat. Your smartphone's battery(such as Accu Dell Vostro 1015) will degrade much much faster when it's hot, regardless of whether it's being used or just sitting around doing nothing. At an average temperature of 32 degrees fahrenheit, a lithium-ion battery will lose six percent of its maximum capacity per year. At 77 degrees, that number jumps to 20 percent, and at 104 degrees it's a whopping 35. Sure, it's not exactly practical (or sane) to keep your phone in the fridge, but it's worth going out of your way to prevent long stays in hot cars and the like. If you're going to be shelving any lithium-ion battery(such as Accu Acer 1830T TimelineX) for a long time, try to leave it with at least 40 percent battery power to tide it over. Lithium-ion batteries don't hemmorage power at 30 percent a month like nickel-metal-hydride batteries do; they'll lose maybe five to ten percent of their charge each month. Buy a new battery. Swenson says a new device's battery should last between three and six years if you follow the habits above. That said, there will still come a time when the battery(such as Accu ASUS N53JN) no longer holds a charge effectively and will need to replace it if possible. You can use an external battery, such as those in Energizer's XP series. Yes, it's a clunky add-on, but it beats dragging a power cord.

The most obvious battery-draining component that you can turn down—or leave off when it's not in use—is the display Lenovo IdeaPad U350W . Reduce the brightness as far as you can, and turn it off when you don't need it. Reduce idle period in the automatic shutoff setting. The more aggressive you are about curtailing your display's energy use, the more battery life you'll conserve. If you're in dire straits, manually shut it off as quickly and as often as possible.

Secondary batteries have existed for nearly as long as their single-serving counterparts but are capable of reversing their ion-producing chemical reaction by oxidizing the cathode and reducing the anode in the presence of a reverse current. In a word, they recharge when you reverse the flow of electrons in the circuit. The three most common chemistries of secondary batteries—lead-acid, nickel-based, and lithium-ion-based—all play ubiquitous roles in modern society IBM ThinkPad R50P , powering everything from cell phones to laptops to cars to server farms.

The lead-acid wet cell reigned as the dominant—well, only—form of rechargeable battery for 40 years. In 1899, Swedish inventor, Waldemar Jungner, devised the Nickel-Cadmium cell. His Ni-Cd wet cells were more powerful and more sturdy than older lead-acid format. Unfortunately, very few people in America had ever heard of Jungner or his work (though he did eventually start his own battery company in 1906), so the discovery went widely unnoticed. It wasn't until 1902, when Thomas Edison created his own Nickel-cadmium cell, that the technology gained a foothold in the US.

Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries are very similar to their NiCd cousins in their construction with both using nickel oxyhydroxide cathodes and both producing a terminal voltage of 1.2V. NiMH batteries however replace the cadmium anode with one made from an hydrogen-absorbing alloy made from a mix of rare earths (either by combining lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, and praseodymium or by using an amalgamation of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and/or aluminium) and use an alkaline electrolyte, typically potassium hydroxide. This grants the NiMH both 200-300 percent the capacity of a NiCd and a current output close to that of a Lithium-ion cell ThinkPad Reserve Edition 8748 . In some high-performance applications the anode may also be made from a titanium/zirconium compound which boost its capacity further.
